Richard Thomas Obituary

Richard Thomas Rantoul - It's with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard L. Thomas, 75. He passed away peacefully on Friday (Dec. 5, 2025) in his Rantoul home, surrounded by family. Born in Somerset, Ky., Rich and his family soon moved to a farm outside of Paxton. When he wasn't helping with the family farm, he excelled in shot put and discus at the local high school. His academic accomplishments earned him a scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he majored in physical education. It was here that he met his wife of 54 years, Cheryl Younker. Together they raised three beautiful daughters, Amanda, Jessica and Victoria. Rich had a robust career as the superintendent of the Rantoul Recreation Department for 39 years. Here, he revitalized facilities and programs that expanded offerings for everyone in the local community. One of Rich's passions was softball; in his 20s, he played on a highly competitive traveling slow-pitch team, and after he and Cheryl had children, he transitioned to the role of coach. He spent the next three decades coaching, first for his daughters followed by many other generations of athletes. Rich is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughters, Amanda, Jessica and Victoria; and sister, Debby. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Sunset Funeral Home And Cremation Center's Lux Chapel, 1551 E. Grove Ave., Rantoul.
